Ajinkya Rahane’s statement on Cameron Green not bowling caught attention of many after MI vs KKR game of IPL 2026.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lost their first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 to Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium. Put into bat first, the three-time champions posted a huge total of 220 runs, with captain Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi scoring fifties.

It looked like the total would be enough, but the MI batters ensured they chased it down comfortably. The openers, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, took the game away from KKR, scoring 78 and 81 respectively. KKR’s bowlers failed to get early breakthroughs and kept leaking runs. The middle order also chipped in towards the end and finished the game in 19.1 overs.

This loss has raised several questions about the bowling unit of the KKR. While their batting looks in form, their bowling has been expensive. In the post-match press conference, Captain Ajinkya Rahane was asked why Cameron Green was not given the ball when others were struggling.

He replied:

“That question you need to ask Cricket Australia,” taking a jibe at them. Cricket Australia has since issued a clarification regarding the matter.

Cameron Green, who has previously represented Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, is known for his all-round brilliance. That is why he was a hot pick in the auction, with KKR going all out to secure him for a record-breaking ₹25.20 crore.

However, Green registered himself in the batter category, which raised questions about whether he would bowl in the tournament. In the first game of the season, he scored 18 runs off 10 balls but did not bowl a single over.

Cricket Australia has now come forward to clarify why Green has not been bowling. They stated:

“Cameron Green has a lower back injury which is being managed but requires him to abstain from bowling for a short period. Cameron is currently rebuilding his bowling loads in India with a view to return in around 10–12 days’ time.”

They further added, responding to Ajinkya Rahane’s remark, “KKR has been communicated with and is fully aware of this information.”

The statement from Cricket Australia clarifies that Green is dealing with a back injury and is currently rebuilding his workload so that he can resume bowling. The team may miss his bowling for the first few games, but the Australian all-rounder, once fully fit in around two weeks, will be able to provide his full services to KKR, justifying the hefty price they paid for him at the auction.

Why didn’t Cameron Green bowl in KKR’s first game of IPL 2026?

Green had a lower back injury and is now rebuilding his workload to be able to bowl in a few days’ time.

At what price did Kolkata Knight Riders buy Cameron Green in the IPL 2026 auction?

KKR bought Green for ₹25.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction.
