Australia all-rounder Cameron Green likely to miss Border-Gavaskar Trophy with back surgery on the cards

Cameron Green had cemented his place at No. 4 with a century in Wellington earlier this year.
Australian allrounder Cameron Green’s chances of participating in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy appear slim as he faces a potential back surgery following a recent injury. His potential absence would significantly hamper Australia’s squad balance in their bid to regain the prestigious trophy.
Green suffered back soreness during the third ODI at Chester-le-Street against England on the UK tour last month and flew home for further assessments, missing the remaining two ODIs. He had scans in both England and Australia.
While surgery is one of the options under consideration by Cricket Australia’s medical team, no definitive recovery plan has been announced yet.
If surgery is pursued, Green will be sidelined for the entire summer. However, if a non-surgical route is chosen, he will have a chance to return as a specialist batter later in the summer.
Green’s injury history
Green has dealt with four stress fractures in the past, the last of which was in 2019. Being a highly talented seam-bowling all-rounder but with injury issues, his workload has been carefully managed by Cricket Australia since his debut.
This latest injury has complicated the task for the selectors and team management ahead of the important home series against India.
If he misses the series, his absence would mean a vacant space at No. 4, where potentially moving Steve Smith back would be a favourable choice for many.
Green had cemented his place at No. 4 earlier this year with a match-winning century in Wellington against New Zealand.
Opportunities for other players
If Green is ruled out, Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Matt Renshaw would all be in contention to fill the opening slot should Smith move back to the middle-order. Harris has started the Sheffield Shield in excellent form after scoring 143 for Victoria against Tasmania. Meanwhile, Bancroft and Renshaw have had slower starts to their season.
India currently hold the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the last four test series against Australia, including twice in Australia.
