Shubman Gill has been a regular in India's playing XI across the formats for a while now.

India’s loss at the World Test Championship has brought a new debate around the change in leadership. India suffered a huge 209 runs defeat against Australia in the WTC Final at The Oval. This was the second ICC knockout defeat under Rohit Sharma. As the new reports have emerged about Rohit Sharma taking a break from the red-ball series, BCCI might be looking for a new option for a leadership role against West Indies if Rohit Sharma is given a break. As KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant are out of the race as they are currently going through rehabilitation. Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin are the front runners for the position.

Bhupinder Singh talks about Gill as option

Former Indian selector Bhupinder Singh Senior has talked about Shubman Gill in detail. Whether India should take a risk by going in with Shubman Gill as a full-time captain in the longer format, Bhupinder Singh responded, “I will not rush him at this juncture because we want to see him as the next batting legend of the country. If things go well, which I am sure will, he can be the next batting sensation from this country. He has that game, aura, and personality. In that process, later on, we can see him develop as a good captain also”. Gill has earned praise around the World for his batting.

Talking about the leadership role, Bhupinder Singh Senior bats for the certainty of captain’s place in the playing eleven and said, “First thing is he should hold his place in the team whatever format you are picking him for. You are sure that for the next couple of years, he will not be a liability to the team. The captain has to be able to pull his weight in the team”. India will soon announce their squad for the West Indies tour. The first test of the tour will be played at Windsor Park in Dominica from the 12th to the 16th of July.
