Mumbai Indians finished 10th in IPL 2024.
Mumbai Indians (MI) will aim to bounce back in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after their poor performance last season.
MI had a forgettable campaign last season, finishing at the bottom of the table in the 10th place. In a bold move, the franchise decided to replace long-time skipper Rohit Sharma with their new acquisition, Hardik Pandya, as captain. However, their move did not yield results as the franchise underperformed miserably.
Ahead of the IPL 2025, MI have made changes in their coaching department. The franchise roped in Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach, replacing Mark Boucher. Jayawardene was MI’s coach during 2017-2022, when they won three titles.
Now, the five-time winners have taken another crucial step by announcing their new fielding coach for next season.
Carl Hopkinson appointed as Mumbai Indians’ fielding coach
Carl Hopkinson will replace James Pammet as the fielding coach of Mumbai Indians. Hopkinson has a proven track. The 43-year-old has been the fielding coach of England’s Men team since 2018. During his tenure, England won two ICC trophies – the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
Hopkinson has also coached England’s Under-19 squad. In his playing career, he played 64 first-class matches, along with 92 List A games and 28 T20s for Sussex.
The franchise will aim to find their groove and end their four-year IPL trophy drought next season.
Having retained five players – Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Surya Kumar Yadav and Tilak Varma – before the auction, MI made some strategic signings during the two-day mega auction.
Trent Boult, A key part of MI’s IPL 2020 triumph, has been brought back to partner Bumrah. Deepak Chahar, another key buy, will sharpen the new-ball attack. The franchise also made the key signing of Will Jacks, who scored 41-ball century in IPL 2024.
