"Form slump can't diminish true class": Chaminda Vaas defends Virat Kohli
Former Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas, has provided an insightful perspective on Virat Kohli.
In recent years, Indian cricket sensation Virat Kohli has faced his fair share of ups and downs in form, leading to speculation about his ability to maintain his class. However, former Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas has stepped forward to silence the doubters and reassure cricket fans that a temporary slump in performance cannot tarnish the greatness of a player like Kohli.
“Most people want Kohli to perform all the time. If he fails in one or two games, people react differently, because Kohli has been scoring right from the beginning of his career. A player can go out of touch, but there is no doubt about his class. Even on the West Indies tour, he has performed. He wants to improve and contribute to Indian cricket. I’m sure he will do well,” said Vaas to Hindustan Times.
Chaminda Vaas began by addressing the expectations that surround a player of Kohli’s stature. He acknowledged that the constant pressure to perform at the highest level can be overwhelming, and any brief underperformance leads to exaggerated reactions from fans and critics alike.
Sri Lankan great comments on Sachin Tendulakar’s career and draws comparisons to Kohli’s
The former Sri Lankan bowler drew parallels to cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, who, in the latter part of his illustrious career, faced similar expectations.
“Even in the latter part of Sachin Tendulkar’s career, people expected him to perform in every match. But that can’t happen all the time. Maybe that’s why Kohli is lacking right now. His fitness level and technique is really good, as far as I’m concerned,” he added.
Vaas pointed out that expecting a player to perform exceptionally in every match is an unrealistic demand, given the unpredictability of the game. He highlighted Kohli’s excellent fitness level and impeccable technique as factors that should provide confidence in his ability to bounce back stronger.
Vaas further addressed the ongoing comparison between Kohli and Tendulkar, noting that records are meant to be broken.
“Records are there to be broken, you know, you can’t keep records all the time. Different eras, different players, but the way I see it, Kohli is still young and has a lot of time. Age is just a number, and the way he’s performing, I’m sure he will do well for Indian cricket. We have seen different generations in which India has produced excellent cricketers,” concluded the Sri Lankan bowler
Chaminda Vaas’ candid defense of Virat Kohli serves as a reminder that a temporary dip in form should not overshadow the enduring class and talent of a player of Kohli’s caliber. Vaas’ insights shed light on the immense pressure players face and the need for patience and support during challenging phases.
