Chennai Super Kings: All captains in IPL history

The Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL title five times.
In terms of the Indian Premier League (IPL) titles, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are the joint-most successful franchise in the IPL history, having won five trophies, same as the Mumbai Indians (MI).
In terms of matches and reaching the playoffs/semi-finals, CSK are well ahead of MI and any other team. CSK have played 239 IPL matches so far and won 138 of them.
Their win/loss ratio of 1.408 is the second-best among all IPL teams, bettered only by Gujarat Titans (1.647), but GT have played only three IPL seasons so far.
CSK have been the most consistent team in the IPL history. They have reached the playoffs/semi-final 12 times out of 15 seasons – they missed the 2016 and 2017 seasons due to suspension – and reached the final 10 times, winning five and losing five of them.
The chief reason for the franchise’s success and consistency over such a long period of time has been the men at their helm: former captain MS Dhoni and head coach Stephen Fleming.
Dhoni has led CSK in 235 matches (IPL and Champions League T20), winning 142 of them. He has played the most number of matches as captain and also has most wins by any captain in the IPL history.
Dhoni last captained in IPL 2023, when he propelled the team to their fifth IPL trophy. He handed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the IPL 2024 season.
Prior to this, two other men also led CSK: Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja. Raina captained CSK in six games when Dhoni was either injured or rested. Jadeja was given the captaincy ahead of the IPL 2022 season, but after eight matches, in which his side won only two, he relinquished his post and handed the leadership role back to Dhoni.
Among the teams who started their journey in the inaugural season in 2008 and are still active, Chennai have had the least number of captains – only four.
List of all CSK captains in IPL history:
