Cheteshwar Pujara scored 19 centuries for India in test cricket during his career.
Cheteshwar Pujara shocked the cricketing world when he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on August 24, 2025. It brought an end to Pujara’s India career that started in 2010.
Pujara last played for India in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia at The Oval, London. At an average of 43.60 and a peak score of 206*, he went on to play 103 test matches and score 7195 runs, including 19 test hundreds and 35 fifties. He scored 51 runs in five ODIs as well.
For many years, Pujara was in charge of India’s No. 3 position in test cricket. Additionally, he was instrumental in India’s run to the ICC WTC 2019–21 and 2021–23 finals.
Additionally, Pujara was a key player in India’s historic wins in the 2018–19 and 2020–21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia.
Cheteshwar Pujara speaks on his most cherished test innings
Cheteshwar Pujara called time on his career when he was snubbed from the Indian team since the ICC WTC 2021-23 final. He had continued playing domestic cricket for Saurashtra in India and in English county cricket. However, he was recently left out of the West Zone squad for Duleep Trophy 2025-26 as the selectors wanted to give youngsters chances.
This might have given a hint to Pujara about his future for the Indian team and led to him deciding to retire from cricket.
Meanwhile, Pujara was a mainstay for India in test cricket and played some amazing innings in the format. Some innings helped India win test matches, while some innings helped India dig themselves out of a hole and save games.
Talking to The Times of India, Cheteshwar Pujara listed a few of his favorite Test innings of his career.
“There have been many important ones, but a few stand out. My 145 not out in Colombo against Sri Lanka, where I had to open the innings, is special.”

“Then there’s the 123 at Adelaide in 2018, on the opening day of the series that we eventually won. My double hundreds in India also stay close to me—206 not out against England in Ahmedabad (2012-13) and 204 against Australia in Hyderabad (2012-13). Another knock I really value is my 92 in the second innings against Australia at Bengaluru in the 2016-17 season,” Pujara told Times of India.
Cheteshwar Pujara was the last of the old-school test cricketers who believed in grinding it out in the middle, instead of attacking the bowlers.
