England Cricket Team all-rounder Chris Woakes, on Monday, 29th September, announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. Woakes represented England for 15 years after making his international cricket debut in 2011.
Recently, the 36-year-old missed out on selection for The Ashes 2025-26 due to his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury. Rob Key, the managing director of England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), revealed that Woakes was not in England’s future plans after missing out on selection for The Ashes later this year.
Woakes was part of England’s last test series against India in August. During the fifth test at The Oval, he sustained a shoulder injury while fielding on first day of the match. He was ruled out of the game due to a shoulder dislocation. However, he showed brave efforts on the final day and came out to bat with a sling on his broken shoulder.

Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid: Chris Woakes
Speaking about his retirement, the 36-year-old said that playing for England was his childhood dream and he feels fortunate to achieve it.
“The moment has come, and I’ve decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket. Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams,” he said.
“Representing England, wearing the Three Lions and sharing the field with teammates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things I’ll look back on with the greatest pride,” he added.
Woakes played 62 tests, 122 ODIs, and 33 T20Is for England during his 15-year-long career. He piled up 2034 runs in tests, 1524 runs in ODIs, and 146 runs in T20Is, including a lone ton in the longest format of the game. With the ball, he clinched 192 wickets in tests and 173 wickets in ODIs. He also captured 31 scalps in the shortest format.
During England’s victory against New Zealand in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 final, Woakes registered a crucial three-wicket haul in the clash. He was also part of the England team that won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 by defeating Pakistan in the final.
