Chris Woakes suffered a shoulder injury during The Oval test.

England all-rounder Chris Woakes sustained a shoulder injury while fielding on day 1 of the fifth test between England and India at The Oval, London. Due to the injury, he was ruled out of the encounter and did not come out to bat or bowl.

However, he took the field with a sling on his shoulder in the second innings as England needed a few more runs for victory on day 5. Although England could not win the encounter, Woakes’ brave efforts were lauded by everyone.

Woakes’ injury also came as a big blow to England in The Oval test as they became one bowler short during the match. England lost the encounter by six runs after failing to chase down a 374-run target. India bowled them out for 367 runs in the second innings to level the series 2-2.

Chris Woakes reveals Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant’s messages after The Oval test

While speaking to The Guardian, Woakes revealed that Gill lauded him for his brave act in The Oval test. He also said that Rishabh Pant sent him a voice note and wished him good luck with the recovery.

“Shubman said something like: ‘That was incredibly brave’. “I told him: ‘You’ve had an unbelievable series, well played, and credit to your team,” he said.

“I saw Rishabh had put an image of me on Instagram with a salute emoji, so I replied thanking him: ‘Appreciate the love and hope the foot is OK’ etc’. He then sent me a voice note saying: ‘I hope all is OK, good luck with the recovery and I hope we meet again out there some day.’ I obviously said sorry for the broken foot,” he added.

Notably, Pant suffered a foot injury in the fourth test at Old Trafford, Manchester when he was hit on his shoe off Woakes’ yorker in the first innings and was taken out of the field immediately. However, he came out to bat the next day and scored a half-century. Later, the wicket-keeper batter was ruled out of the fifth test.

Meanwhile, the five-match test series between England and India ended in a 2-2 draw. While England won the first test and third test by five wickets and 22 runs respectively, India captured victories in the second game and the fifth encounter by 336 runs and six runs respectively. The fourth test ended in a draw.
