'Man for big tournaments,' Cricketing fraternity showers love for retired Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement on August 24 from all forms of cricket.
On August 24, 2024, former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket with immediate effect. The southpaw took to his social media to make this announcement.
The veteran cricketer played for the Indian cricket team for over 13 years. Dhawan played 34 tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is in his glorious career. The left-handed batter amassed 2315 runs (tests), 6793 runs (ODIs), and 1579 runs (T20Is) in the three formats.
The former Indian opener played his last game for India in an ODI match against Bangladesh in December 2022. Dhawan played his last T20I against Sri Lanka in 2021, while he hasnโt featured in test cricket since 2018.
Shikhar Dhawan last played competitive cricket for the Punjab Kings during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Dhawan couldnโt play the whole 2024 edition as he was injured midway, which ended his season prematurely.
Dhawan uploaded an emotional video message while announcing his retirement.
โItโs important to turn the page to move forward in a story, and in life. Thatโs why, I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. Iโve told myself to not feel sad that you wonโt play for India again, but feel happy that you played for the country,โ Dhawan said in his retirement video.
After Dhawan announced his retirement, several prominent cricketers and former cricketers showered love on the opener.
