CSK have been part of the Indian Premier League since the maiden edition in 2008.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are the most successful and consistent teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years. The franchise has been part of the tournament since the maiden edition in 2008.

With five titles across 18 seasons, they are the joint-most successful team in the tournament’s history with the Mumbai Indians (MI). Moreover, CSK have qualified for the playoffs more than any other team, making them the most consistent performers in the IPL.

CSK‘s presence is not limited to just IPL; they have two more teams in other franchise T20 leagues. They own the Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC). SA20 is a franchise T20 league based in South Africa, and MLC is a league of the United States of America (USA).

CSK to join the Women’s Premier League in the future

The Chennai franchise wants to increase dominance in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in the future. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has stated that they are aiming to acquire a team in the WPL.

Speaking about the franchise’s long-term plans during the invest in Tamil Nadu conclave, he said, “Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women’s cricket. We may also go into other sports over time.”

Currently, the Super Kings are among the IPL franchises without a women’s team. The WPL currently comprises five teams based in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh.

Well-known IPL franchises such as the Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad are yet to form a team in WPL.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also proposed expanding the teams in WPL in the future. The tournament witnessed a mega auction ahead of the WPL 2026 season.

Meanwhile, the WPL 2026 is set to observe the final on February 5. While Smriti Mandhana’s RCB Women have booked a berth in the final, Gujarat Giants Women and Delhi Capitals Women have qualified for the playoffs.

Mumbai Indians Women and UP Warriorz have been eliminated from the tournament after finishing in the last two spots in the points table.
