BIG BLOW for CSK! Their costliest buy suffers serious shoulder injury ahead of IPL 2026

CSK shelled out INR 14.20 crore each in IPL 2026 auction for two uncapped Indian players.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) surprised everyone in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction last month by shelling out a huge sum of money for two uncapped players. The five-time champions bought Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer for INR 14.20 crore each, making them costliest uncapped players in the history of auction.

CSK bought Prashant Veer, who is a spin all-rounder, with an aim to fill the vacant spot in the squad after Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s ouster. While Ashwin announced his retirement from IPL and Indian cricket last year, Jadeja was traded to his former team Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the next season.

Notably, CSK underwent a big bidding war with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2026 auction to capture Veer into their squad. The young spinner had a base price of INR 30 lakh but CSK did not shy away from spending crores on him.

Prashant Veer suffers a shoulder injury in Ranji Trophy 2025-26

The 20-year-old, who represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket, feature in the ongoing second leg of Ranji Trophy 2025-26. During a clash against Jharkhand, he suffered a severe shoulder injury. While fielding at mid-off, he put in a dive to stop the ball and injured his shoulder in the process.

After his injury, team physios rushed out and treated him with pain relief sprays. He was eventually taken off the field and later returned with a sling on his shoulder. According to the initial scans, he has sustained a grade 2 shoulder injury and is likely to be ruled out of the domestic tournament.

Moreover, as per a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Veer will need about three weeks to recover from his injury. As a result, he will not have enough time to undergo rehabilitation and be fit in time to play for CSK in IPL 2026. The tournament will start in the last week of March after the conclusion of ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
