Ayush Mhatre scored 59 runs in 36 balls before being retired out in CSK vs DC clash of IPL 2026.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) entered match 18 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 searching for their first win of the season. After losing yet another toss, Ruturaj Gaikwad and his men were inserted to bat first against the in-form Delhi Capitals (DC).
Unlike CSK, DC won their first two matches before failing in the third match in what proved to be a thrilling clash against Gujarat Titans (GT). Playing their home match in Chepauk, the Men in Yellow will hope to reassert their dominance, having faltered in their home matches since last season.
The return of Dewald Brevis will bolster their batting unit, but they will know that against DC‘s formidable batting lineup, they need to set up a target in excess of 210, to stand a chance.
Why was Ayush Mhatre retired out in CSK vs DC despite a half-century?

After the early wicket of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the powerplay, Ayush Mhatre walked out at number three. Alongside Sanju Samson, the duo formed a splendid partnership to help CSK reach a respectable total.
On a decent batting wicket, they made up for the initial slow start by taking on the pacers and spinners alike. While Samson smashed IPL 2026’s first century, Mhatre too hit a half century in no time at a strike rate of 163.89.
With 175 on the board at the end of 17.3 overs, and just one wicket down, CSK decided to send Shivam Dube to the crease. The management knew they needed more quick runs, given CSK’s recent bowling woes. Ayush Mhatre, who had slowed down in the previous two overs, had already done his job.
The decision to send Dube in at four was proved correct, as the Indian all-rounder smashed a quickfire cameo, which was headlined by 2 fours and 1 six, at a blistering strike rate of 200. Dube’s 20, alongside Samson’s exceptional century ensured CSK posted 212 runs at the end of their 20 overs.
