Steve Smith is leading Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pat Cummins’ absence.

Australia got their campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 underway on Saturday against Ashes-rivals England in Lahore.

Both teams are coming into this tournament on the back of an ODI series loss: England were whitewashed by India in a three-match ODI series, and Australia lost 0-2 in Sri Lanka.

Australia’s issues are compounded by the absence of five key players: Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis. Cummins, Hazlewood, and Marsh are ruled out due to injuries, Starc has withdrawn due to personal reasons, and Stoinis retired from ODIs despite being named in the preliminary squad.

The pace trio of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood has been key in Australia dominating ICC events over the past decade, which includes winning two ODI World Cups, one T20 World Cup, and one ICC World Test Championship. So the absence of all three seamers is a huge dent for Steve Smith’s team.

When was the last time Australia played an ICC ODI match without Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood?

The last time Australia played a match in an ICC ODI tournament without all three of Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood was in the 2013 Champions Trophy in their first group game against Sri Lanka. Cummins and Hazlewood were not even part of the squad at that time, while Starc was benched for that game.

Teams:

Australia (Playing XI): Matthew Short, Travis Head, Steven Smith(c), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis(w), Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson

England (Playing XI): Philip Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith(w), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(c), Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
