Daren Sammy was appointed as West Indies’ white-ball coach in 2023.
Daren Sammy, who was appointed as West Indies‘ white ball coach in May 2023, has been elevated to the all-format coach. The former West Indies captain will take charge of the test team from April 2025, replacing Andre Coley, as announced by Cricket West Indies (CWI).
The CWI director of cricket, Miles Bascombe, confirmed the decision to expand Sammy’s role at a press conference in St Vincent.
Bascombe said, “Post our current World Test Championship campaign, we are going to be expanding Mr Sammy’s role to encompass all formats, so when we host Australia next summer, Daren Sammy will be the head coach of all senior men’s teams.“
Sammy’s appointment as white-ball coach in 2023 brought dramatic improvements in West Indies’ performance. Under Sammy, the West Indies have won 15 out of 28 ODIs.
In T20Is his impact has been even more significant. His reign has seen West Indies clinch four home series, including victories against India, England and South Africa.
In contrast to the limited-overs team, the test side has struggled under coach Andre Coley, winning just two of their last 11 matches while suffering seven defeats.

Reacting to the announcement, Sammy expressed his excitement and readiness to take on the new role.
The two-time T20 World Cup winning captain Sammy said, “It’s always an honour to represent West Indies in any format or any position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting,“
The 40-year-old also emphasized the importance of trusting the process and focusing on gradual improvement.
He concluded, “I’ve already mapped out some of the areas and some of the processes that we’ll have to follow in order for us to be successful [in Test cricket]. I’m a patient man and once I trust that process and understand the requirement from the director of cricket, then the plan gets into action.“
