David Miller got injured while playing for Paarl Royals in SA20 2025-26.

South Africa’s veteran batter David Miller is racing against time to be fit for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The left-handed batsman sustained a severe injury while playing for Paarl Royals (PR) in the ongoing SA20 2025-26.

During PR’s last league stage clash against Joburg Super Kings (JSK), Miller sustained an injury while fielding in the first innings. He left the field in the 16th over and did not return to bat in the chase.

Moreover, he was also ruled out of the Eliminator clash between Royals and Super Kings on Thursday, January 22. Miller’s ouster came as a big blow for PR, as he was in good form and also captained the team well.

Notably, the 36-year-old is also part of South Africa’s squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2026 and one of the most experienced members of the side. January 31 is the deadline for all teams to submit their final squad to the International Cricket Council (ICC). Proteas have already suffered two blows ahead of the tournament as Donovan Ferreira and Tony de Zorzi have been ruled out of the campaign.

While Zorzi failed to recover in time from a hamstring injury he sustained in December last year, Ferreira picked up a shoulder injury in SA20 2025-26. Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have replaced them in squad for the T20 World Cup.

However, despite Miller’s injury, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has not ruled him out of the World Cup so far. In an official statement on Thursday, CSA gave an update on Miller’s condition, saying that he has suffered an adductor muscle injury and will undergo a fitness test in the upcoming days. The outcome of the test will decide his availability for the T20 World Cup.

CSA also added that Miller has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and Rubin Hermann has been added to the squad.

“David Miller suffered an adductor muscle injury on Monday while playing for Paarl Royals and will play no part in the T20I series. His availability for the T20 World Cup remains subject to the outcome of a fitness test ahead of the support period. Rubin Hermann has been added to the squad for the T20I series against West Indies in place of Miller,” CSA said.

Proteas will clash with West Indies in three T20Is at home from January 27 to 31; with an aim to prepare for the T20 World Cup. They are placed in Group D in the tournament and will play their opening game against Canada on February 9 at Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.
