Australian opener David Warner missed the second T20I against New Zealand due to an injury.
Veteran opener David Warner will miss the final T20I against New Zealand on Sunday due to an adductor injury, Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed ahead of the third T20I match. However, the news comes with some relief as CA also stated that Warner is expected to be fit for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
Earlier, the veteran opener David Warner also hinted that he will not play for the Australian national side beyond the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. This statement came after the conclusion of the Australia vs West Indies T20I series earlier this month. The Australian southpaw announced retirement from ODIs on January 1, 2024, and played his last test match on January 6, 2024.
Meanwhile, the Australian cricketer Warner also mentioned that after the T20I series against New Zealand, he will take part in the upcoming edition of the IPL 2024 before heading into the T20 World Cup, which is going to be played in the West Indies and USA in the month of June 2024.
Despite his absence, Australia already hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with the final match scheduled for Sunday at Eden Park in Auckland.
Australian opener Warner’s recovery time is estimated to be approximately seven to ten days. This also means that David Warner has played his last international bilateral series in the Australian jersey.
“Warner will require a brief recovery period which is not expected to affect his availability for the upcoming Indian Premier League leading into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” a CA statement said.
Warner’s absence presents an opportunity for other players in the Australian squad to impress before the T20 World Cup later this year.
New Zealand’s Devon Conway ruled out of final T20I against Australia
New Zealand’s opener Devon Conway sustained a blow on his left thumb while wicket-keeping off Adam Milne in the second over of the second T20I match against Australia. New Zealand coach Gary Stead opened up about Conway’s injury on the eve of the final clash.
“There is a little bit of a concern because we’re not one hundred per cent sure yet exactly how it’s going to respond over the next three or four days,” Stead told reporters in Auckland as quoted from cricket.com.au.
“We’ve still got a little bit of time, and I think at the end of the day it will come down to pain management and what he can do in that space around making sure he feels comfortable at the crease,” he added.
