Glenn Maxwell last represented Australia in test cricket in 2017.

Glenn Maxwell has been a standout performer for Australia in limited-overs cricket. His excellent record extends beyond Australia to the Asian conditions where he has proved to be a match-winner for the Aussies.

Recently, Maxwell had expressed his desire to make test comeback for Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka scheduled for January 2025. Citing his preparations in the sub-continent in 2022 as a key factor, Maxwell said,

“The week or so leading up to the Sri Lankan Tests in 2022 was probably the most enjoyable practice and training I’ve ever had, My tactics will be exactly the same as I’ve played in Tests in the past—backing my strengths and ensuring I have a solid defense while exploring scoring options around that.”

However, Glenn Maxwell’s former teammate, David Warner, has recently expressed his opinion on the all-rounder’s potential return to test cricket. Warner provided the rationale behind his stance, explaining why the Victorian all-rounder should not be selected in the test squad.

David Warner on why Glenn Maxwell’s potential test return

Speaking to CODE Sports about Maxwell’s potential return to the Australian test side for the Sri Lankan tour, Warner said. “If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to actually want it, to want to play four-day cricket.

He further elaborated, “Unless he’s putting his hand up, he’s playing all the club cricket stuff and all that, to want to play Test cricket. He in my (opinion), doesn’t deserve that opportunity.

Warner also emphasized the importance of grinding out in domestic circuit to earn a place in the Australian team. The southpaw concluded, “I just don’t think you can keep putting your hand up to say, ‘I want to play just that.’ You know, it’s like me saying I just want to play in Australia, like you’ve gotta be seen to be wanting to do the work grind it out and do that.
