Deepak Chahar was released by CSK before the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Mumbai Indians (MI) bought star Indian speedster Deepak Chahar for INR 9.25 crores at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. Deepak’s move to Mumbai ended his seven-season association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Coming to the IPL 2025 mega auction, Deepak was not retained by CSK. CSK decided to retain their core of last season holding on to – Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni (uncapped player).
With limited funds available in the purse, the franchise was unable to match Mumbai’s bid for Deepak. Known for his exceptional bowling with the new ball, Chahar will now play majority of IPL games at the pace friendly wicket of the Wankhede Stadium.
Deepak has now broken his silence expressing his feelings about leaving CSK and joining his new team MI.

In an interview with Sports Tak, Chahar opened up about his deep connection with CSK and MS Dhoni.
Deepak said, “Mahi bhai has supported me from the start, that’s why I wanted to go to CSK. But my name came on the second day at the auction, so I had a fair idea that it would be difficult for me to get back to CSK. They had a low purse, but still bid till INR 9 crores despite a purse of INR 13 crores.”
The pacer admitted that he had mentally prepared himself for the possibility of not returning to CSK, especially since the team had spent most of their budget before his name came up on Day 2.
Chahar continued, “I had made up my mind that it would be difficult. Last year, my name came first, that’s why it was easier to get back to CSK.“
