Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting dropped massive information ahead of IPL 2024.
Delhi Capitals (DC) had a terrible IPL 2023 season and finished in ninth place in the points table. DC were led by former Australian opener David Warner in the IPL 2023. Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the entire season of the Indian Premier League previous year due to a massive accident he suffered in December 2022. Pant is likely to make his comeback in the upcoming IPL 2024.
DC team management is still unsure about Rishabh Pant’s participation in the entire season. Pant is trying his best to make a comeback in March, but his full-season participation is still in doubt. Regular captain Pant will be leading the DC squad in IPL this year if he returns, but in case he misses a few initial weeks of the league, DC will be looking at different options for leadership.
Ponting reveals Delhi Capitals captain
DC coach Ricky Ponting confirmed that David Warner, who captained DC in IPL 2023, will be leading DC once again if Rishabh Pant doesn’t take part in the league. Ponting was addressing a press conference in Melbourne and also confirmed that Mitchell Marsh, David Warner, and Harry Brook will be DC’s top-order batters. Ponting said, “With Harry Brook coming into the set-up as well, so Warner, Marsh, Harry Brook, we’ve got some really good overseas batters.”
Ricky Ponting also acknowledged the fact that DC looked under-prepared in the previous two Indian Premier League seasons. Ponting said that if they get their full strength squad ready, DC will be a dominant side. Ponting added, “If we can get Nortje and Jhye Richardson fit, and with the two spin options, we’ve got a really good squad that to be fair has probably underperformed the last couple of years, so we’ve got some work to do.”
DC are still not sure about Jhye Richardson’s comeback as the right-arm pacer is still not fit. There is no specific timeline given on the pacer. DC won 5 matches under David Warner’s leadership in the previous IPL season. Ricky Ponting also acknowledged that DC had a poor show with the bat in the IPL 2023.
