Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan have played two test matches each for India thus far.

On Wednesday (February 28), the Board of Control for Cricket in India released the central contracts for the 2023-24 season. The significant news was the suspension of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s contracts by the Indian cricket regulatory body following their absence from the Ranji Trophy this season.

All other players who played for India in the previous year received contracts, including Rinku Singh, Rajat Patidar, Tilak Varma, and Jitesh Sharma on the new list of contracted players. However, prominent cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, and Shikhar Dhawan were released from their contracts after being out of the team for an extended period.

Despite contracts for everyone who has played for India, Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan were not included on the list of contractual players. After debuting in the Rajkot test, both players have played two tests in the ongoing series against England.

Jurel has been outstanding for India throughout the series. He was named Player of the Match in Ranchi’s fourth Test. Jurel scored 90 runs in the first innings and then combined with Shubman Gill to win the match in the second.

Sarfaraz, on the other side, performed admirably on debut, scoring back-to-back fifties in the Rajkot test. Although he did not perform in the Ranchi test, the youngster is anticipated to make a big recovery given his class.

Here is how Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel can earn their BCCI central contracts

The current contracts for the Indian men’s cricketers, announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), do not include Dhruv Jurel or Sarfaraz Khan. There is a reason.

The duo failed to meet the contract selection criteria. Jurel and Sarfaraz made their test debuts against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. They did not meet the condition of playing at least three tests for the Indian squad, as they had only played two each.

BCCI revealed how players not part of the ongoing list can get a contract in the future. BCCI revealed any player who plays 3 tests or 8 ODIs, or 10 T20Is for India will automatically get a C contract on a pro-rata basis, which means an earning of Rs. 1 crore and match fees.

Additionally, athletes who meet the criteria of playing a minimum of 3 Tests, 8 ODIs, or 10 T20Is within the specified period will automatically be included in Grade C on a pro-rata basis. For instance, Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, having played 2 Test matches so far, will be inducted into Grade C if they participate in the Dharamsala Test Match, i.e., the 5th Test of the ongoing series against England,” said a statement by BCCI.

This means Jurel and Sarfaraz will get a contract if they are part of the playing XI in the fifth test against England.

However, in the case that both Jurel and Sarfaraz do not play in the fifth test match in Dharamshala, they will need to play either their third test or 8 ODIs or 10 T20Is before September 30, 2024. By fulfilling this criteria, Sarfaraz and Jurel will become eligible for the Grade C contract by the BCCI.
