Did India make mistake by playing Dhruv Jurel over Sarfaraz Khan in 1st SL vs IND Test?

Dhruv Jurel’s India Test spot threatened by Sarfaraz Khan’s domestic dominance.

Heading into the 1st Test at Galle, the primary selection headache for Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill revolved around the multiple options in the middle order.

With Rishabh Pant already donning the gloves, India had to choose between Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan. Notably, Sarfaraz was later included in the squad as a replacement for injured Sai Sudharsan

However, India‘s objective was crystal clear: if Sudharsan had not been injured, Sarfaraz would not have even travelled to Sri Lanka with the Indian team. Selecting Jurel unconditionally over Sarfaraz under subcontinent conditions raised eyebrows.

One of the core reasons for the management to keep their faith in Jurel would be his fitness and his proven excellence in the format for India. Jurel had made an immediate splash upon entering international cricket, brought into the limelight by his 90 against England at Ranchi.

While establishing himself as a temperamentally sound middle-order batter, the UP wicket-keeper batter also showed his prominence with the gloves. Jurel stepped in to rescue India on several occasions when on-field keeper Rishabh Pant struggled with injury during the England and West Indies series.

While Dhruv Jurel has a decent record both domestically and internationally in the longest format of the game, the vote for a better middle-order batter would surely go to Sarfaraz Khan due to his exemplary first-class record.

Playing for Mumbai in domestic red-ball cricket, Sarfaraz’s batting credentials are more than extraordinary. Early in 2026, he scored his fifth First-Class double century against Hyderabad, which also saw him march past the 5000-run milestone in First-Class cricket.

With a stupendous domestic average of nearly 65, he became the third player since Wasim Jaffer and Ajay Sharma to have scored more than 900 runs in consecutive Ranji seasons.

Why is Dhruv Jurel better suited for Team Balance?

Unarguably, Sarfaraz is a compelling candidate in the role of a specialist batter. His first-class average, extensive experience on Indian domestic surfaces and proven ability to bat on subcontinent tracks could have made him the frontrunner for the Galle Test had India not been aiming for team balance.

Dhruv Jurel was picked for his additional quality as a wicket-keeping option, which India often needs under several stressful conditions. During the first innings of the Galle Test, a confident innings of 51 runs helped Indian selectors further justify their choice. However, he was dismissed cheaply for a score of 7 in the second innings.

Therefore, India made no mistake in selecting Dhruv Jurel, even though Sarfaraz would undoubtedly have been a stronger batting option in subcontinental conditions. If the question is about overall balance, then Jurel’s selection can easily be justified.
