Rohit Sharma is gearing up for the ODI series against New Zealand, which will begin on January 11 in Vadodara.

Rohit Sharma is a cricket legend, and his fan following in India is massive. The former India captain has a calm and humorous demeanour, and generally gets along well with teammates and fellow cricketers. However, fans sometimes get carried away with their emotions of sighting their favorite player, thereby unintentionally crossing a red line.

In a country like India, where cricket is a religion, privacy simply doesn’t exist for the players. Each and every movement of theirs is captured by the media. A recent video is doing the rounds, where Rohit Sharma was seen sitting in his car and waving at kids, alongside his wife and son.

Rohit Sharma’s viral interaction with ill mannered kids

The 38-year-old had the window of his car down, while waving. However, these young fans crossed all limits, by touching Sharma’s arm while taking the selfie. While they didn’t mean any harm, such actions could be dangerous, and intrude any individual’s personal space.

Sharma was clearly unimpressed by the children’s behaviour and was quoted by nearby media saying, “Daya, zara inko garden mein lekar aao, wahin khabar leta hoon.” Yet, even in a sensitive moment, he showed no signs of rage or anger, handling the situation calmly and with his trademark sense of humour.

The remark roughly translates to him asking his bodyguard to take the children to the garden so he could question them there, a tongue in cheek reference to his iconic “garden” line that once went viral during a Test match in India. The subtle pun added levity to the moment, reinforcing Sharma’s reputation as a composed leader who can defuse tension with.

After playing two Vijay Hazare matches, which included a fantastic 155 in his opening encounter, Rohit Sharma will be back in Indian colors for the upcoming ODI campaign against New Zealand. Featuring in three ODI matches, starting off from January 11, India are fielding a weakened outfit, with key players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah rested.

With not many ODI tours left ahead of the all-important ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, every 50-over series from now on will be extremely important for team India, as they look to finally bring back the cup after a long wait of 16 years.

What did Rohit Sharma say in the viral fan interaction video?

He humorously said: “Daya, jara inko garden mein lekar aao to, vahin khabar leta hoon,” playfully threatening to “deal” with the overzealous kids in the garden.

What is the reference behind Rohit’s “garden” line?

It references his famous 2024 stump mic rant during a Test vs England: “Koi garden mein nahi ghoomega” (no one will stroll in the garden), meaning no lax fielding – now a popular meme.

Why was Rohit unimpressed with the kids?

The young fans crossed personal boundaries by touching his arm while taking selfies, invading his space despite good intentions.
