Selectors neither have vision nor cricketing sense: Dilip Vengsarkar slams BCCI

Former Indian cricketer and selector Dilip Vengsarkar has come down hard on the current selectors and BCCI.

Former Chief Selector of the Indian Cricket team and legendary batter Dilip Vengsarkar has slammed Indian team management and selectors and said that they lacked vision. Vengsarkar has also questioned the game awareness of the selectors. India’s bench strength ability has always come under scanner in the recent past, especially in test cricket.

Former Indian captain Vengsarkar said, “The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen in the last 6-7 years neither have the vision, deep knowledge about the game or cricketing sense. They made Shikhar Dhawan India captain (in the Sri Lanka tour in 2021), it was a time where you can groom the future captain”. Shikhar Dhawan was appointed India captain for a tour against Sri Lanka when most of the players were busy in the English tour in 2021. Team India played an ODI and a T20 series with Sri Lanka with youngsters.

Criticising the functioning, Vengsarkar said, “You have not groomed anybody. You just play as it comes. You talk about the richest cricket board in the World, where is the bench strength? Just having the IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights, should not be the only achievement”. This is not the first time a former cricketer has come out in the open criticising Indian cricket’s planning for big international events.

India lost another World Test Championship Final at The Oval last week. India suffered two crushing defeats in the WTC Finals consecutively and the 2023 loss against Australia has made former cricketers more vocal. India have not been able to win an ICC Title in the last 10 years after the Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni.
