Dinesh Karthik reckons Tilak Varma is an Ideal No. 4 for India in 2023 ODI World Cup
Dinesh Karthik lauded Tilak Varma for his brilliant start in the international cricket.
Tilak Varma made a remarkable entry into international cricket by outscoring all other Indian players in his debut series against West Indies. His consistent performances helped him earn his maiden ODI call-up for India in the upcoming Asia Cup in 2023. In the 17-member squad announced on Monday, Tilak Varma was the only debutant in the squad. The left-hander was India’s best batter in the T20I series against West Indies.
Varma made it to the team after two successful IPL seasons with the Mumbai Indians. He scored 343 runs for MI in the IPL 2023, which forced the selectors to give him his international call-up. He scored 173 runs in his debut series and was the second-highest scorer in the series. Veteran Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik has been impressed with the rapid growth of the 20-year-old and lauded the youngster for adapting to the challenges in the international arena.
“I was very impressed with Tilak Varma”- Dinesh Karthik lauded the youngster
During a Cricket World Cup commercial shoot with Emirates, Karthik talked about the 20-year-old and said that he can be considered for the No. 4 spot in the batting order for the Indian team in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. DK highlighted how maturely Tilak managed different situations in his debut series. In a couple of games, he went after the bowling from the start, while in a few, he controlled the situation and finished off the games with Hardik Pandya.
Adding to that, Karthik also pointed out that Tilak also has the option of bowling off-spin, which makes him a special player in the team. DK said, “I was very impressed with Tilak Varma. He showed different sorts of temperament. More important is that he can add off-spin, and we have not had somebody who can roll their arm over, so that makes that player very special.”
Furthermore, the veteran keeper also said that India need a couple of left-handers in the top six. In the current line-up, only Ravindra Jadeja is the left-hander in the side, which makes it easy for the opposition to make plans. But if India have 2-3 left-handers, that will be a different ballgame. DK also said that Shreyas Iyer is the perfect No. 4, but because he is coming off an injury, it will give chances to other players as well to make a place.
