India's tour of South Africa 2024
Dinesh Karthik adds more fuel to under-fire Shubman Gill's place in Indian test team
Shubman Gill has been running in poor form in the longest format of the game.
In the aftermath of India’s disappointing performance in the first test against South Africa, questions loom over the team’s ability to secure victories in SENA countries. Amidst the various areas requiring improvement, veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has cast his doubts on Shubman Gill’s place in the squad.
Following Virat Kohli’s resignation as test skipper, India have struggled to secure a win in SENA nations. The recent defeat at Centurion has intensified scrutiny of individual player performances, with Shubman Gill’s underwhelming contributions at the forefront. In the two innings, Gill managed scores of 2 and 26, contributing to India’s innings defeat.
Dinesh Kartik on Shubman Gill’s place in test team
Dinesh Karthik’s remarks, citing the potential inclusion of Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar, suggest a possible change in the Indian test team’s line-up.
Dinesh Karthik did not mince words when discussing Shubman Gill’s performance, stating, “Shubman Gill is the big question mark here. He has not lived up to the expectations that people have. I think even he would be aware that if you are going to average mid-30s or early-30s after having played 20 Tests, then you would consider yourself to be a bit lucky to be around. His place will definitely be under the scanner if he doesn’t have a great Test match in the next one,” The former wicket-keeper told during an interaction with Cricbuzz.
Karthik’s insights extend beyond criticism, as he identifies potential replacements for Gill in Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar. Speaking about the middle-order prospects, he remarked, “The only middle-order name that we are missing out on is Sarfaraz Khan. I have no doubt that he will make it to the squad much sooner than he thinks right now. Other than that, you do not have any other names doing the round in the middle order right now. Rajat Patidar is a very, very strong name that I think they will be looking at very soon,”
As Gill’s form wavers, the possibility of inclusion of Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar making their mark in test cricket becomes increasingly possible.
