National Museum of Australia bought Don Bradman’s baggy green, which he wore in the 1946-47 Ashes series.

The National Museum of Australia has bought a cap worn by the legendary cricketer Sir Don Bradman for AU$438,500 (approx US$286,700). The National Museum and the Australian federal government contributed half the cost to buy the cap.

The cap, known as the baggy green, was worn by Bradman when he captained Australia in the 1946-47 Ashes series, which was played after the Second World War. Australia won the five-match series 3-0.

Notably, the cap is just one of 11 of Bradman’s baggy greens known to exist. Another cap is placed in Australian Sports Museum. The location of the other nine caps is private.

National Museum director welcomes Don Bradman’s iconic cap

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, National Museum director Katherine McMahon said that Australia are delighted to bring Bradman’s cap into the country.

“Sir Donald’s baggy green marks the life of Australia’s most celebrated batsman and reflects a time when sporting heroes gave Australians hope, following the heartbreak and hardship of the Second World War,” she said.

“We are delighted this national treasure has found a home here at the National Museum of Australia for all Australians to enjoy,” she added.

Meanwhile, Don Bradman is often considered the greatest batter of all time. The right-handed batsman represented Australia in 52 tests from 1928 to 1948. At an incredible batting average of 99.94, he amassed 6996 runs in 80 innings.

The former Australia captain also slammed 29 centuries and 13 half-centuries in his career, including 12 double centuries. Bradman passed away in 2001 at the age of 92 years.
