Sri Lankan bowler Dunith Wellalage has rattled Indian top-order.

After a magnificent opening partnership, team India succumbed to Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage’s opening spell. Wellalage wreaked havoc among Indian top-order, as he got three wickets in his first three overs. Indian top-order struggled to find their feet against Dunith Wellalage and lost their wicket. Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma all failed to read the line and provided Sri Lanka a little breather in the game. Once, India were looking all set for the big score, but this one spell has now put them a little on the back foot. He took just 13 deliveries to rattle Indian top order.

Dunith Wellalage's triple attack

Indian captain Rohit Sharma (53) and opener Shubman Gill (19) had an opening stand of 80 runs in 11 overs. Sri Lankan captain asked Dunith Wellalage to come in and bowl against the cruising Indian openers, and he didn’t disappoint. In his first ball of the game, Wellalage got Shubman Gill out. Shubman completely misread a full-length delivery, and lost his wicket against a young left-arm spinner. Gill was castled by Wellalage. Sri Lankan fans on Twitter went over the moon as he got three in three overs.

In the next over, Wellalage bowled a good-length delivery to Virat Kohli. Kohli looked to play a pull shot and fetch a boundary. Kohli (3) went for it, but he mistimed it only to be caught at mid-wicket by captain Dasun Shanaka. He conceded only two runs in his first two overs to get the wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. Kohli had an outstanding game against Pakistan and scored a century. Wellalage kept his line tight and deceived Indian batters with the turn he was getting from R Premadasa Wicket as well as with his pace variation.

In his third over, Wellalage bowled an arm-ball against Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma didn’t move his feet to play a low bounce and was completely surprised by this delivery. He could block the ball that went in to hit his leg stump. A few fans on social media have compared Wellalage’s spell with how Ajantha Mendis used to bowl and pick wickets in bulk.

Currently, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are fighting hard against the Sri Lankan spin attack. This is Dunith Wellalade’s 13th ODI in his international career.
