The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League is off to a great start on the field as the defending champions won the season opener in front of their own fans. In this analytical preview, Eoin Morgan – Chief Cricket Analyst, Parimatch, one of the game’s most respected cricket minds – delivers a comprehensive breakdown of the favorites who can build on their previous title wins in the IPL 2026 season.

The 2026 season of the Indian Premier League got off to a brilliant start as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and five-time champions Mumbai Indians won their respective season openers at their home grounds.

While both games were run-fests, it was interesting to see two fast bowlers bagging the Player of the Match awards, thus proving that teams which have a lot of depth in batting alongside X-factors in the bowling department will be ruling the roost in IPL 2026.

The fans of every franchise and multiple pundits have already started debating about which team could win the 19th edition of the cash-rich league. Eoin Morgan, the former England and Kolkata Knight Riders skipper, has delivered his verdict, exclusively for Parimatch Sports.

Eoin Morgan feels the Mumbai Indians can become the first IPL side to win their sixth title

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians did well last year to retain their Indian core of skipper Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. Along with having five of the best T20 players in the country, MI also bagged the likes of Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Will Jacks, and Ryan Rickelton in the mega-auction.

In the mini-auction ahead of this season, they did most of their work off the table as they traded in Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur, and Mayank Markande, further providing them with backups in all departments, with Quinton de Kock also coming in at his base price to provide cover for Rickelton.

The five-time champions did well last season as they made it to Qualifier 2, and with a strengthened squad which is watertight in every department, it’s tough to argue against their chances of lifting the trophy for the sixth time this season.

With two ICC T20 World Cup winners in Sharma and Suryakumar supporting Hardik in the leadership group, along with Mitchell Santner, Jasprit Bumrah, and Quinton de Kock, MI has an experienced camp that can help them in the tougher phases of the tournament.

With the young blood of Naman Dhir, Allah Ghazanfar, and Robin Minz also present in the squad, along with reliable bowlers like Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and Corbin Bosch, MI has a squad that’s rich in quality and international experience.

In the season opener, MI gave away a lot of runs in the first eight overs, but the introduction of Shardul broke the opposition’s opening partnership, which was followed by Bumrah and Boult suffocating the new batters for runs. In the second innings, Rohit and Rickelton were splendid at the top as they stitched together a 148-run partnership in less than 12 overs, leaving the very able middle-order to wrap up the run chase with ease.

With a couple of tweaks in the playing squad from the season opener, MI could prove to be invincible throughout the season as they built an excellent squad which hasn’t been affected by injuries or unavailability so far. The option of playing two spin-bowling all-rounders, Jacks and Santner, could further increase the depth of their batting line-up and provide them with a bank of six to seven overs on a spin-friendly surface.

Morgan backs RCB to build on their last title win

That being said, I also like the fact that Royal Challengers Bengaluru have retained most of their title-winning squad and have also refreshed in a couple of areas, providing able backups which would push the existing players in the playing squad to give their best.

Virat Kohli is back to his best, and he could roll back the years with the willow in his hand as we witnessed in the season opener, where RCB made a mockery of the run-chase as they scripted the fastest ever 200+ run-chase in the history of the IPL with 26 balls remaining.

With the twin English options of pairing up Virat with either Phil Salt or Jacob Bethell, RCB have a stacked top-order that also comprises the in-form Devdutt Padikkal, who has finally started delivering on the promise he showcased in his breakthrough years.

Skipper Rajat Patidar is a destroyer of spin bowling and showcased the same in the season opener as he smacked 31 runs off only 12 balls, propelling RCB to chase down the target with 26 balls to spare. The middle-order also comprises the dangerous trio of Jitesh Sharma, Tim David, and Romario Shepherd.

Talking about the season opener, it was the performance of Jacob Duffy that impressed the fans the most, and Duffy’s addition to the team is crucial, with Josh Hazlewood set to sit out a major portion of the season.

Along with Duffy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will take the mantle of bowling with the new ball, and the duo of Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma will be turning the ball in the middle overs. Mo Bobat and Andy Flower do need to figure out who will be bowling at the death, with Hazlewood not ready to bowl yet, as per Cricket Australia’s assessments.

The improvements made in the squad that broke RCB’s deadlock of not lifting the elusive IPL trophy are pivotal, as the presence of Venkatesh Iyer would certainly motivate Padikkal and Jitesh to keep producing their best performances, while the additions of Mangesh Yadav and Abhinandan Singh would help fill the gap left by Yash Dayal’s absence in IPL 2026.

The weight of not winning the IPL title was certainly heavy for Virat and the other players who joined the franchise after him, as the fans had been waiting for a long period. Now, with the players unburdened by that fact, the Royal Challengers could truly express themselves in this edition of the league, as seen in their first home fixture of the season.
