Jonny Bairstow didn’t hit a single half-century in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
England have decided to move on from Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan in their white-ball setup as the trio have not been picked for the upcoming home white-ball matches against Australia. Further, Liam Livingstone has been excluded from the ODI side.
These players were part of England’s golden generation in white-ball cricket that achieved plenty of success from 2015 to 2022. But now, as the Three Lions failed to defend their titles in both formats in the last two ICC events, they have been omitted from England’s current plans as they start building for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
England will host Australia for three T20Is, starting September 11, and five ODIs, beginning September 19.
Last year, England failed to reach the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and this year, they were knocked out in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by India, thus losing hold on both the white-ball titles.
Five uncapped players have been named in the T20I squad: Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Dan Mousley, Josh Hull and John Turner.
Mark Wood will miss the games against Australia due to a thigh injury he sustained during the first test against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Joe Root has been rested from the ODI series.
Five players – Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Matthew Potts – who are part of the ongoing test series against Sri Lanka have been named in the ODI squad; with a short turnaround time between the test series and T20I series, they could not feature in the T20Is against Australia.
