England will face Ireland in the first ODI on Wednesday at Headingley, Leeds.

After a high-voltage contest between England and New Zealand in the T20I and ODI series, the world champions will move on to their next international assignments. The T20I series against New Zealand ended 2-2, but England came hard in the 50-over contest, and they won the ODI series 3-1 after losing the first ODI.

Now, they will host Ireland for three ODIs ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. This series will start on September 20 (Wednesday), with the first ODI to be played at Headingley in Leeds. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has chosen a second-string team for this series. Here we will predict the playing XI for England for the first ODI.

ENG vs IRE: England's Predicted playing XI vs Ireland

1. Zak Crawley (c):

Zak Crawley is appointed to be the captain for the Ireland series, who is a well-known face in the test arena for England. Crawley hasn't had many ODIs under his belt. He has played three ODIs and scored 97 runs, but has been a successful opener for England at Test. His aggressive starts have helped England in red-ball games. He will be keen to restart his white-ball journey.

2. Ben Duckett:

Ben Duckett is another case like Crawley, who is a regular in test format but hasn't had many chances in white-ball format. But Duckett has been consistent enough in domestic white-ball cricket. He has played six ODIs and scored 146 runs, and he will have a great opportunity in his hands to do well in the coming ODIs to prove his worth.

3. Will Jacks:

Will Jacks is a promising all-rounder for England's domestic cricket and has played a few international matches for his country. He will have a big role in the coming ODIs, as he is likely to play in all three games, and he can show his ability with both the bat and the ball. He had a good performance in The Hundred and will look to continue.

4. Joe Root:

Joe Root was not part of the initial announced squad, butdoi he requested the ECB include him in the first ODI to have some game time. Root played all four ODIs against New Zealand but didn't have a great series, and he is part of the World Cup squad and will be looking to get a big score to gain some confidence.

5. Phil Salt:

Phil Salt is an aggressive keeper batsman who has played some ODIs for England and did well. He has played 14 ODIs and scored 460 runs at an average of 38.33. He likes to take on bowling, which is why he is in the plans for England in the future. Salt will look to use this series to prove himself worthy of England's future plans.

6. Sam Hain:

Sam Hain got his maiden ODI call-up for the England-Ireland series after some consistent performances for Warwickshire at the domestic level. He is a pretty good stroke-maker who can play both spin and pace pretty well. Hain can play in top-order and middle-order as well. Born in Hong Kong and starting his career in Australia, Hain will look to do well in his debut.

7. Rehan Ahmed:

Making his debut at the young age of 18, Rehan Ahmad impressed everyone, but getting a chance with England's team is very difficult. But now, he will be England's main spinner against Ireland and can do well with his performances to get noticed by selectors for the coming series for the English team.

9. Tom Hartley

Tom Hartley is another young prospect who is likely to make his debut in the first ODI against Ireland. He is a left-arm orthodox bowler who replaced Overton in the squad. He is a useful all-rounder and has played 19 first-class games with 39 wickets and 504 runs with the bat. He can be the surprise package for Ireland, as they haven't seen him.

9. Brydon Carse:

Brydon Carse was part of the English team that played against New Zealand. He did a pretty good job with the ball, and now he will be back against Ireland. Carse is a nippy bowler who can hit the deck pretty hard. He can also hit the long ball at the lower down of the order, which we might see in the coming series. In 10 ODIs, he has taken 13 wickets so far.

10. Luke Wood:

A left-arm pacer who can bring the ball into the right-hander is always a dangerous bowler to face. Luke Wood, from Yorkshire, comes with such a skillset. He is tall and gets bounce with a swing, which makes him a difficult bowler for the batters. Wood has only played one ODI so far, so it will be great exposure for him.

11. Matthew Potts:

Matthew Potts is another swing bowler who is tricky to face. Potts has played a handful of tests for England. In six tests, he has taken 23 wickets, and his last test was against Ireland. He will be sharing the new ball and can also bowl at death. He has a great chance to show his skills and get into a race for a place in England's main squad.
