Top 5 England batsmen with most test centuries away from home

A test century is always a special landmark for any batter, and scoring a hundred away from home is even more memorable because of them being out of the batter’s comfort zone.
England have produced many great batters in the longest format of the game, and a number of them have thrived in away conditions.
This article is also related to one such stat where we will talk about the top five English batters who have scored the most hundreds in away test matches. A total of seven English batters have scored 10 or more away hundreds in test cricket.
List of Top five England batsmen with most test centuries away from home
5. Wally Hammond – 13 test centuries
Wally Hammond is one of the most celebrated names in English cricket history. Back in his time, he was a run machine for England in test cricket. Hammond played 85 tests for England and scored 7249 runs with 22 centuries.
Out of those, he played 41 away test matches, in which he slammed 13 hundreds, scoring 4245 runs at an average of 66.32. Hammond holds the record for the second-most runs (295) in a single day in test cricket.
4. Colin Cowdrey – 13 test centuries
Colin Cowdrey was the first English batter to play over 100 or more test matches. He was a phenomenal batsman who was well-known for batting for long period of time. With over 42,000 runs along with 107 centuries in First Class (FC) cricket, Cowdrey was an elegant and highly effective batter.
He scored 22 hundreds for England in 114 tests, and 13 of them were away from home. Overall, he scored 7624 runs, and in away tests, he scored 4087 runs at an average of 44.91.
3. Ken Barrington – 14 test centuries
Only three batters have a batting average of over 58 after scoring 6000 or more runs in test cricket. England’s Ken Barrington is one of them. The former middle-order batter played 82 tests and scored 6806 runs at an average of 58.67 with 20 centuries.
Interestingly, 14 out of his 20 hundreds came away from home, which indicates how good he was in alien conditions. Barrington played 36 away tests and scored 3459 runs at an average of 69.18 with 14 centuries and 14 half-centuries.
2. Joe Root – 15 test centuries
The leading run scorer for England in test cricket, Joe Root is already a legend in tests. Since making his debut in 2012, Root has scored the most runs, the most 50s, and the most 100s for England.
Root has already scored over 12,500 runs at an average of over 50. He has played 73 away tests, and in them, he scored 6128 runs with 15 centuries and 32 half-centuries with a best of 262.
1. Alastair Cook – 18 test centuries
Alastair Cook holds the record for the most test centuries for England away from home with 18 hundreds to his name.
The former opener left a great legacy behind with his incredible test career for England. He played test cricket between 2006 and 2018 and represented his country in 161 tests, scoring 12,472 runs with 33 centuries and 57 half-centuries.
Cook played 72 tests away from home and scored 5904 runs at an average of 46.48 with a best of 263. He scored 18 hundreds and 25 half-centuries outside England, earning him the top spot on this list.
