England have finalised their squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.
England have made a surprise announcement in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 squad. They have dropped their 2019 World Cup X-factor Jason Roy and drafted in young Harry Brook. Jason Roy didn’t feature in any of the games against New Zealand in the recently concluded four-match ODI series due to back spasms. England will be taking on Ireland in a three-match ODI series before leaving for India. Jason Roy’s recent form was also a sign of worry for the English camp. England opened with Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan in the series against New Zealand.
England have brought in young middle-order sensation Harry Brook in the World Cup squad despite his poor run of form against New Zealand in the three ODIs that he played. Brook scored only 37 runs in 3 innings against Kiwi bowlers. Roy’s exclusion and Brook’s selection has given a clear signal that Dawid Malan will be opening the innings along with Jonny Bairstow while Joe Root will be batting at Number 3 in the top-order. Dawid Malan has done a brilliant job as an opener and scored three fifty-plus scores. Malan smashed a century in the final ODI.
Luke Wright on England selection:
England’s national selector Luke Wright informed the press, “We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup. We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team. The strength of the group has meant that we have to make some tough decisions on World-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad.” Other than Jason Roy’s exclusion most of the players were expected to make it into the English squad.
Ben Stokes has come out of ODI retirement to play another edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Stokes was England’s hero in their 2019 campaign. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid are the two frontline spinners along with spin all-rounder Liam Livingstone in the 15-member squad for the mega event. England will be taking on New Zealand in the tournament opener at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. England will play their final home game against Ireland on 26th September before heading to India.
