4 England cricketers who were part of ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad and will play in 2025 edition
England were knocked out in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
England were the first team to announce their 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy (CT) 2025. This will be their first ICC assignment with the new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, who became England’s all-format coach after Matthew Mott’s resignation. The same squad will take on India in a three-match ODI series prior to the ICC event.
The ICC CT 2025 will be played in a hybrid model across Pakistan and the UAE. England are slotted in Group B along with South Africa, Australia, and Afghanistan. So, all of their group matches will be played in Pakistan.
England hosted the last edition of the ICC CT in 2017. They won their three group games, but were knocked out in the semi-finals by the eventual champions Pakistan.
The majority of the players from England’s ICC CT 2017 squad have either retired or been dropped. Only four players who featured in the competition in 2017 are part of the squad for the upcoming mega event.
4 England cricketers who were part of ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad and will play in 2025 edition:
1. Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler is now England’s white-ball captain. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Buttler scored 94 runs in three innings while remaining not out twice. He cracked 61* off 48 against New Zealand.
In the past six months, Buttler has dealt with a calf injury, but made a strong comeback recently on the tour of West Indies.
Under Buttler, England have had two consecutive disappointing ICC campaigns. The Three Lions would be looking to get back to glory days with the ICC CT 2025.
2. Joe Root
Veteran batsman Joe Root has returned to the ODI setup, having last played in the format in the World Cup 2023.
In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Root was his side’s leading run-scorer with 258 runs in four innings at an average of 86, recording one century and one fifty. He was his side’s top-scorer in the semi-final they lost to Pakistan.
3. Mark Wood
Fast bowler Mark Wood will be back in action with the ODI series in India ahead of the ICC CT 2025. Wood missed England’s test tours to Pakistan and New Zealand earlier this year due to an elbow injury that he sustained in the home summer.
In the ICC CT 2017, Wood picked up five wickets in four games at an average of 32 and maintained a good economy of 4.32. His best figures in the tournament were 4/33, which came against Australia.
4. Adil Rashid
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid has been England’s premier spinner in white-ball cricket for over a decade now. The 36-year-old leggie was a key contributor to England’s title-winning campaigns at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
In the ICC CT 2017, Rashid picked up seven wickets in three matches at a brilliant average of 20 and an economy rate of 4.73. His best figures in that competition were 4/41, which were recorded against Australia.
