Jordan Cox scored a century for Essex before getting injured.
Jordan Cox, the wicket-keeper batter of England, had an injury scare during the current County Championship, only weeks before their action-packed summer officially began. While batting for Essex in a County Championship Division One game, he was forced to retire due to injury.
Shortly after being selected for England’s side for the forthcoming one-off test match against Zimbabwe, he was in excellent form, scoring a cool 103 in his innings.
Jordan Cox was in the running to earn his all-white debut after being selected in the 13-man squad for Friday’s match against Zimbabwe. Although he was included in England’s squad for their tour of New Zealand towards the end of last year, he was unable to play in the series due to a broken finger.
The lackluster performance of England’s current opener, Zak Crawley, who has only made one fifty in his last 14 test innings and last achieved a three-digit score of 189 in the drawn fourth test in Manchester nearly two years ago, has played a part in his selection.
Jordan Cox’s injury just before the Zimbabwe test puts England on alert
While celebrating his most recent England call-up with a century for Essex on the third day of their Rothesay County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton, Jordan Cox was concerned about an injury.
The 24-year-old took a fast single off Jack Leach to put him on 99, but he collapsed to the ground clutching his left side just above the hip. Before being assisted to his feet, he stayed in a prostrate position while receiving treatment for the same location he had been experiencing while batting.
Related Cox only managed to reach his ton by hitting a boundary off Leach while he was at the wicket, but he promptly retired injured. When Somerset batted, he was substituted on the field and did not participate in the second innings of Essex.
“Jordan has a problem with his side, which our medical staff is in the process of assessing. Unfortunately, because it is a Sunday, it has not been possible to get the injury scanned. Hopefully, that will happen as soon as possible tomorrow, and we will know a lot more then. He played a tremendous innings, and it was a shame he was not able to go on,” Essex’s captain, Tom Westley, said.
In preparation for the four-day test match at Trent Bridge from May 22 to 25, the England team is anticipated to gather in London the following week and then practice in Loughborough. England will play Zimbabwe in their first test match since 2003.
