Eoin Morgan leaves out England as he names favourites to win ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Eoin Morgan led England to ICC Cricket World Cup victory in 2019.
Eoin Morgan, who led England to their first-ever World Cup victory in 2019, is back in the spotlight as we gear up for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He’s a key reason why England have been so successful in shorter formats of cricket. The excitement is building as the World Cup is set to start in October. The opening match will see England facing New Zealand, who were the finalists in the last edition.
Morgan’s recent comments have made things even more interesting. In a recent talk with the media, Morgan shared his thoughts on which teams are likely to shine this year. Morgan’s opinions matter a lot in the cricket world, thanks to his deep understanding of the game.
In a surprising turn of events, Morgan, has raised eyebrows by naming India as the favorites to clinch the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Morgan’s candid assessment has turned heads, as he paced India ahead of his own nation, England, traditionally considered a strong contender in global cricket tournaments.
“India on home soil are the favourites,’ Morgan picks India over England
Morgan’s prediction of England’s triumph in the World Cup is a significant statement. While England have consistently maintained their powerhouse status in limited-overs cricket, Morgan’s frank evaluation showcases his unbiased approach. Morgan said while speaking to Revsportz on the show Backstage with Boria, “England are a very good team. I will rate them second favourites after India but only just. India on home soil is the favourite and are a very good team. That’s been the case for all of the last few world cups. India in 2011, Australia in 2015, England in 2019 and India again in 2023. But Jos Butler and his team have some fantastic batsmen and bowlers and their talent will make a big difference come the business end of the tournament.”
He went on to pick his top four teams of the tournament, he picked India, England, Australia and Pakistan as the contenders to pick the prestigious trophy.
If you ask me to pick my best four, I will add Australia and Pakistan to the mix. With the matches spread across all parts of the country, it will be a real Test and these four teams have the maximum depth and versatility,” Morgan added.
‘Makes him a game–changer,’ Morgan comments on Indian captain Rohit Sharma
Morgan’s remarks didn’t just stop at naming India as favorites. He deeply went into the strengths of individual players, highlighting their potential impact. Speaking about Rohit Sharma, he stated, “Rohit’s ability to dominate and anchor the innings simultaneously makes him a game-changer. His records speak volumes about his consistency on different pitches and conditions.”
Turning his attention to Virat Kohli, the former England captain remarked, “Kohli’s leadership and aggressive batting style set the tone for India. His passion and commitment are contagious and can uplift the entire team.” These insights into the two stalwarts underline their pivotal roles in India’s campaign.
However, the most intriguing aspect remains his decision to place India ahead of England in his predictions. His views reflect the changing dynamics of international cricket, where teams like India have risen to prominence.
