Shocking ! Ex-Ranji player passes away at 38 after collapsing on field

The EX-Ranji player collapsed while playing Khaled Memorial Second Division Screening Tournament in Mizoram.

In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, former Mizoram Ranji Trophy player K Lalremruata died at the age of 38 after collapsing during a local match on January 8, 2026.

The event unfolded at the Suaka Cricket Ground near Sairang railway station in Aizawl, during the Khaled Memorial Second Division Screening Tournament. Lalremruata, representing Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club (VRCC) against Chawnpui ILMOV Cricket Club, had just finished his batting innings when he complained of chest pain and breathing difficulties while returning to the pavilion.

He collapsed moments later and, despite immediate medical attention, could not be revived. The Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM) confirmed the cause as a stroke, describing it as a profound loss for the state’s cricket fraternity.

Lalremruata’s cricketing journey was marked by dedication and perseverance in a region where the sport is still emerging. As a wicketkeeper-batter, he represented Mizoram in two Ranji Trophy matches, India’s premier first-class tournament, where he scored a total of 17 runs. His contributions extended to the shorter format, featuring in seven Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 matches, amassing 87 runs.

While his statistics may not rival those of international stars, his achievements were significant in the context of Mizoram’s nascent cricket ecosystem. He played a pivotal role in nurturing talent at the grassroots level, representing multiple local clubs and inspiring young players in a state with limited resources and infrastructure for the game.

K Lalremruata’s Mizoram legacy

Beyond the numbers, Lalremruata will be remembered for his unwavering passion for cricket and his commitment to its growth in Mizoram. In a region where opportunities are scarce, he embodied resilience, transitioning from state-level representation to actively participating in local tournaments even in his late 30s.

His involvement helped elevate the sport’s profile, encouraging community engagement and fostering a new generation of cricketers. Tributes poured in swiftly, with CAM expressing condolences and canceling all scheduled matches as a mark of respect.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of K Lalremruata, who collapsed during a cricket match today. He experienced breathing difficulties during the match… My heartfelt condolences go out to his bereaved family, friends, and members of the sporting fraternity during this difficult time”, remarked Mizoram’s Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar.

“He represented Mizoram twice in the Ranji Trophy and seven times in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He had also played for several clubs at the local level. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family; may God comfort them as they navigate this great loss”, said Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM).

This tragedy underscores the physical demands of cricket and the need for better on-field medical support in local leagues. Lalremruata’s legacy endures as a symbol of dedication, reminding us that true achievement lies in uplifting the game at its roots. His family, friends, and the Mizoram cricket community are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
