Fans react as India squad for Asia Cup 2023 gets announced
Tilak Varma has received maiden India call-up for ODI Asia Cup 2023.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on August 21, 2023, announced the Team India 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 tournament which begins on August 30 onwards.
There were many speculations in both the batting and bowling departments and the squad was as expected with a couple of surprises as well.
As for the batting unit, Rohit Sharma, the captain has been picked along with Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli at the top order. Also chosen as a backup opener was Ishan Kishan. Virat Kohli would continue to bat at No. 3 for India.
Now the big news was the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, both coming off surgeries for their respective injuries. Shreyas Iyer has been out since March 2023 with a back issue and Rahul has been out of action since May 2023 after suffering a thigh.
But now both have been chosen in the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and will probably solve India’s no. 4 conundrum.
Apart from them, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Suryakumar Yadav also have been picked to form a middle order. Also named in the squad is Tilak Varma, bringing a left-handed option in the middle as well.
The spin department saw Kuldeep Yadav being the only wrist-spin option meaning that Yuzvendra Chahal missed out. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are the other two spinners being named in the Asia Cup squad.
As for the pace options, India are spoilt for choices as they picked Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Sanju Samson has been named as a backup player for Asia Cup 2023.
The squad evoked many reactions from the fans and experts alike on social media and they reacted with respect to some players who were picked and some who had to be left out.
