Ruturaj Gaikwad replaced an injured Shreyas Iyer at no.4 in India XI for this ODI series.
Ruturaj Gaikwad was the toast of the nation as he hit his maiden ODI century in the ongoing second ODI between India and South Africa. This match is being played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur, on December 3, 2025.
India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul lost the coin toss, and Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s captain, chose to bowl first, with dew in the evening being a factor. South Africa made three changes to their XI, with Bavuma, Keshav Maharaj, and Lungi Ngidi entering in for Ryan Rickleton, Ottneil Baartman, and Prenelan Subrayen.
On the other hand, India came into this match with an unchanged XI, meaning that Ruturaj Gaikwad would get another chance to show his form after scoring just eight runs in the first ODI in Ranchi.
Rohit Sharma started well with 14 in 8 balls with three consecutive boundaries, but was out the very next ball, caught behind off Nandre Burger. Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to make the most of the chances he’s getting in ODIs, scoring 22 in 38 balls with two fours and one six before being dismissed by Marco Jansen.
In came Ruturaj Gaikwad at no. 4 and joined Virat Kohli in the middle, and the two managed to turn the tide in the Indian team’s favour. They bided their time when the South African bowlers were at the top, and once they got settled, they took the attack to the bowlers.
Gaikwad was particularly harsh on spinners and raced to his fifty in 52 balls. He added 195 runs with Virat Kohli for the third wicket.
Gaikwad continued on, hitting two fours and one six off one over from Keshav Maharaj, and the floodgates opened as both he and Kohli started hammering the bowlers.
Gaikwad had the moment of his India career as he achieved his maiden ODI ton off just 77 balls with 12 fours and two sixes to his name. This was his 18th ton in List-A cricket, but his first for India, as he replaced Shreyas Iyer at no. 4 in the Indian XI.
Gaikwad ultimately fell for 105 runs in 83 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes to his name.
