Fire breaks out at Eden Gardens in Kolkata during Cricket World Cup 2023 renovation work: Reports
Eden Gardens in Kolkata will host the second semi-final of the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is not far away, and the world is just two months away from witnessing the mega event that will start in India. The tournament will begin with a match between England and New Zealand, the finalists of the last edition on October 5, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India will begin their journey on October 8 with a game against the five-time champions Australia, in Chennai.
Ten venues across India will host the ICC Cricket World Cup games. With not much time left, all these stadiums are getting ready for the mega event, and as per the guidelines of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the necessary changes and renovations are taking place. However, amid all the renovation work, a massive fire broke out at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Fire breaks out at Eden Gardens in Kolkata during renovation works for 2023 ODI World Cup.
Eden Gardens is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world of cricket. It has hosted many big matches in the past. Even in the upcoming games, it has been given the responsibility to host some big matches, including the semi-final on November 16. India will also play one of their games against South Africa at this venue on November 5. But with the renovation work going on, some reports confirmed the first incident at this stadium.
According to Sangabad Pratidin, it took place at 11:50 p.m. The groundstaff, who were present there, confirmed seeing smoke coming from the “away team’s” dressing room. Meanwhile, the reports confirmed that renovation work was going on just outside that area. The fire was reportedly caught from a false ceiling while two fire trucks reached the place and controlled the fire.
Notably, a total of six games will take place in Kolkata during the upcoming ICC event. The first match here will be played on October 28 between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The ICC and BCCI inspected this venue last week. However, there is no reason to worry, as the fire incident will not affect the preparations for the upcoming mega event in India.
