Former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir revealed the toughest bowler he faced in his cricketing career.

Gautam Gambhir, the maestro of Indian cricket, has thrived under pressure on the grandest stages. With the bat in hand, Gambhir played pivotal roles in two of India’s most memorable triumphs, scoring the highest runs in the 2007 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in and in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. However, even in the face of such monumental achievements, there was one bowler who posed challenge to the left hander.

Gambhir is currently serving as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. He was previously working with Lucknow Super Giants in the previous two seasons.

In a recent Twitter Q&A session, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir reflected on his illustrious international career, and revealed the name of the bowler he considered the toughest to face. Among the plethora of questions posed by fans, one stood out, Who has been the toughest bowler you’ve ever faced? Responding with unequivocal admiration, Gambhir tweeted, “One and only Muttiah Muralitharan.”

Gambhir’s acknowledgment of Muralitharan’s skills holds significance, considering Indian batsman’s commendable performances against Sri Lankan legend. Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in international cricket, posed a formidable challenge to many, but Gambhir, known for playing spin well, not only survived but thrived against the legend.

In ODIs, Gambhir maintained an impressive average of 42 against the legendary spinner, being dismissed only three times in 147 balls and scoring 128 runs. In test cricket, Gambhir faced Muralitharan 271 times, scoring 137 runs and being dismissed just four times, attaining a commendable average of 34. Even in the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, Muralitharan failed to dismiss Gambhir in the 41 balls bowled to him during IPL, and conceded 51 runs.
