Gautam Gambhir’s record as a head coach in tests isn’t great.
Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir faced a lot of criticism after his team lost the opening test against the England Cricket Team despite a marvellous batting show. The Ben Stokes & Co. won the encounter by five wickets as Indian bowlers failed to defend a 371-run target.
Surprisingly, five centuries came from four Indian batters in the Headingley test, however, their knocks went in vain as England eventually outplayed India with their dominant batting show. The Ben Stokes-led side lead the five-match series 1-0. Both teams are preparing for the second test, which will start from July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Notably, Gambhir is about to complete one year as the head coach of India. The former skipper of the team was appointed as the head coach in July last year following India’s victory in ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Gambhir succeeded Rahul Dravid in the role.
Will Gautam Gambhir be sacked if India lost to England?
Gambhir’s record as head coach in the longest format of the game has been dismal so far, with India winning only three tests out of 11 games. Last year, India faced a 3-0 whitewash in a home series against New Zealand and after that lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia 3-1.
After India’s poor show in BGT 2024-25, some members of the support staff were sacked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). There were threat over Gautam Gambhir’s place as well, as per various reports, but BCCI official has revealed that he will not be sacked even if India lose the test series against England.
“At the moment, Gambhir is doing a good job with a young team. In transition, you do not always get the intended results. Australia and England both struggled during their transitions. So, it’s premature to take a call on Gambhir”, a BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.
“We still have four Test matches in England, and we are hopeful that we can turn things around. Beyond that, we will see. He (Gambhir) has full trust of the board,” he further added.
Notably, Gambhir was appointed as head coach after his success as mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Under his guidance, the franchise won the title. Gambhir’s term as head coach will run till ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, set to take place in South Africa and Zimbabwe in October and November 2027.
