Gautam Gambhir was appointed as India’s all-format head coach on 9 July 2024.

India are set to face Australia in a highly anticipated five-match test series for the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. India created history on their last tour of Australia – winning the test series 2-1 and becoming the first team to defeat Australia at Gabba after 32 years.

India’s upcoming tour, however, has a different set of challenges for the Asian giants. Coming after an unprecedented 0-3whitewash home test series defeat, the Indian team will arrive at Australia with an extremely low morale.

India’s shocking defeat against the Kiwis exposed the fragile Indian batting lineup against a quality bowling attack. Australia’s bowling attack consisting of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon will test the Indian batters on bouncy pitches.

The poor results have put head coach Gautam Gambhir’s position at risk, a defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy can lead to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) making a big decision regarding his future.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure under scrutiny

According to a report by Dainik Jagran, Gambhir’s role as India’s head coach in test cricket can come under threat if India lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. While the BCCI is eager to retain him for the white-ball formats, the management might decide to go for a specialist red-ball coach in VVS Laxman.

Gautam Gambhir, who has previously mentored two Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), had a rough start to his Indian coaching tenure with ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka followed by test defeat at home against New Zealand.

Reportedly, Gambhir recently engaged in a lengthy six-hour meeting with BCCI’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma, reflecting on the series defeat against New Zealand.

India’s batting approach will be a key point of focus in the upcoming series.
