Sunil Gavaskar said that Virat Kohli is not someone who will walk away after two low scores.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has rubbished rumours regarding Virat Kohli’s retirement from ODI cricket following his flop batting show in the ongoing series between Indian Cricket Team and Australian Cricket Team. The Indian legend believes that there is still plenty of cricket left in Kohli and big innings is around the corner for him.

The right-handed batsman bagged two consecutive ducks in the first two games in Perth and Adelaide, which happened for the first time in his career. In the second ODI in Adelaide, he was hit on his pads by pacer Xavier Bartlett, and was given LBW.

While returning to the pavilion, Kohli showed his gloves to the crowd, and his gesture led to rumours about his possible retirement from ODI cricket after the series on social media. Notably, the senior Indian batter has already pulled the curtains down on his T20I and test careers.

During a conversation with Sports Tak, cricketer-turned-commentator Gavaskar rejected rumours about Kohli’s retirement, saying that he is not someone who would walk away after two low scores. The 76-year-old believes that there is plenty of cricket left in Kohli, and fans can expect a big knock in the third ODI in Sydney. He also backed Kohli to play in ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.

“Virat Kohli is not someone who walks away after two low scores. Do you really think he’ll retire after getting 0 and 0? Absolutely not. He’ll want to finish on a high. There’s still the Sydney match, the home series against South Africa, and many more ODIs to come. I believe he’ll play through to the 2027 World Cup, alongside Rohit Sharma. Even the Australians would have loved to see him score big,” he said.

“The man has over 14,000 runs, 52 ODI centuries, and 32 Test hundreds. He’s scored so many runs for India that he’s allowed a couple of failures. There’s still plenty of cricket left in him. Maybe we’ll see a big innings from him in Sydney. Adelaide has always been one of his favourite grounds, so expectations were high, but it just wasn’t his day,” Gavaskar added.

Speaking about Kohli’s gestures towards the crowd in Adelaide ODI, Gavaskar said that he was just expressing his gratitude to spectators for their support.

“Usually, you raise your bat or helmet after a big score, but this was just his way of showing gratitude for the incredible reception. People are reading too much into it,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the third ODI between Australia and India will be played on October 25 (Saturday) at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney. Mitchell Marsh & Co. have sealed the three-match series after winning the first ODI by seven wickets (DLS method) and the second ODI by two wickets.
