Rohit Sharma broke Chris Gayle's record for most sixes in international cricket.
It was a record-breaking night for the Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday in Delhi, as he broke a number of all-time records with his sparkling hundred against Afghanistan in India's second game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. His innings helped the team to register their second win of the tournament. India started the competition with a 6-wicket win over Australia in Chennai.
Rohit Sharma was unstoppable and registered India's fastest hundred in World Cup history. He smashed a 63-ball ton and went past Kapil Dev's 72-ball hundred, which was the previous record for India. Rohit also completed 1000 runs in the World Cup in just 19 innings, which is the joint-fastest along with David Warner. The Indian captain was adjudged Man of the Match for his heroics against Afghanistan.

Rohit Sharma scored 131 off 84 balls, including five maximums and 16 boundaries. It was Rohit's seventh hundred in World Cup history, and he went past Sachin Tendulkar's record for six World Cup hundreds. Rohit has now scored 7 hundreds in just 19 innings. On the other hand, Rohit also went past Chris Gayle's world record for most international sixes across formats.
Prior to this innings, Rohit needed only three sixes to cross Gayle, and he ended up hitting five maximums. Gayle had hit 553 in his career, while the Indian captain has not hit 556 across all three formats. As soon as Rohit went past the record, social media was flooded with reactions from the fans. Chris Gayle himself reacted to the moment and hailed Rohit Sharma.
Chris Gayle took X (formerly Twitter) to post a special message for Rohit Sharma. He posted, "Congrats, @ImRo45 - Most Sixes in International cricket. #45 Special."
The Universe Boss took to twitter and shared a story of a picture of him and the Indian captain. Notably, the former West Indian opener took 551 innings to reach these numbers, while the Indian captain did it in only 473 innings. Team India will now play their next match against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
