Gerald Coetzee has not been included in South Africa’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

South Africa have been dealt with a major setback ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as their fast bowler Gerald Coetzee suffered injury.

The Proteas are drawn in Group B of the tournament and face a tough path to the knockouts with Australia, England, and Afghanistan in their group. South Africa were already dealing with injury issues among their fast bowling reserves with several key pacers missing during their two-match home test series against Pakistan.

Their problems have now worsened with this recent setback.

Gerald Coetzee sustains hamstring injury

In a recent setback, South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the ongoing SA20 due to hamstring strain. The young pacer will now undergo scans to determine the severity of the injury. He last played on January 14 in a league stage match against Durban’s Super Kings.

Coetzee’s injury has raised doubts about his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Initially left out of the squad, he was likely to be called up if Nortje didn’t recover from his back injury.

South Africa now face the challenge of considering other fast bowling options for a potential call-up. Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, and Ottniel Baartman are the leading candidates for the Proteas if the opportunity arises.

The Proteas will begin their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Afghanistan on February 21 in Karachi, followed by a match against Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25. They will wrap up their group stage matches against England in Karachi on March 1.

South Africa squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025:

Temba Bavuma (c), Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, Rassie van der Dussen.

South Africa group stage schedule:

21 February – South Africa vs Afghanistan, Karachi

25 February – South Africa vs Australia, Rawalpindi

1 March – South Africa vs England, Karachi
