Glenn Maxwell ended his career as one of the finest for the Australian Cricket Team.
In what has been the latest development, Australian Cricket Team all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The all-rounder mentioned that the 50-over cricket seemed tiring to him now, and he told the selectors to build the team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
Glenn Maxwell, who is rated as one of the best all-rounders in white-ball cricket, made the decision keeping in mind his fitness. The right-hander, however, will continue to represent the Australian Cricket Team in the T20I cricket and tests, if given the opportunity.
Talking about his retirement, Glenn Maxwell revealed that he went to the selectors and told them he won’t make it into the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. Speaking on the Final Word podcast, he explained:
“I said to him right then and there, ‘I don’t think I’m going to make that. I think it’s time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role.”
It feels like it’s a tiring affair just to get through – Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell was honest enough to admit that if conditions aren’t perfect, his body will struggle in the ODIs and it will be all about surviving. He added:
“I started to (realise) that if I don’t have the perfect conditions in 50-over cricket, my body just struggles to get through that. It feels like it’s a tiring affair just to get through – and almost surviving – the 50 overs, let alone being at my best throughout that 50 overs, and then going out there and trying to perform with the bat as well.”
Glenn Maxwell ended his career as one of the finest for the Australian Cricket Team. He won two ODI World Cups with Australia in 2015 and 2023, playing a huge part with the bat as well as ball in the tournaments. He retires as a batter with the highest batting strike-rate (126.70) in ODI history among any batter to have scored at least 2,000 runs.
Maxwell featured in 149 ODIs for the Australian Cricket Team and mustered 3990 runs at an average of 33.8. The all-rounder scored four centuries and 23 half-centuries with the best of an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which is rated as one of the best innings in ODIs.
Glenn Maxwell, who played his last ODI in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, was also sensational with the ball. He picked 77 wickets at 47.32 and was also rated among the top fielders in the 50-over cricket. His absence no doubt, will leave a massive void in the team.
