New Zealand middle-order batter and part-time off-spinner Glenn Phillips picked up a five-wicket haul against Australia in the first test match played at Basin Reserve in Wellington. Phillips’ maiden five-wicket haul helped New Zealand restrict the Australian side under 200 in the second innings of the Wellington test. Despite his magnificent efforts, the Black Caps are not in a good position in the game.
Glenn Phillips became the first New Zealand spin bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in test cricket after 16 years in New Zealand. This is only the second occasion in 16 years when a home (NZ) spin bowler has taken a five-wicket haul in New Zealand. Previously, former NZ cricketer Jeetan Patel took a five-wicket haul for the Kiwis in 2008 against the West Indies at Mclean Park in Napier.

Glenn Phillips’ first wicket was Australian opener Usman Khawaja (28) on Day 3 of the first test match. Phillips then went on dismiss Travis Head (29), Mitchell Marsh (0), Alex Carey (3) and Cameron Green (34) in his outstanding spell. Cameron Green was his fifth wicket in the innings. His bowling helped the Kiwis restrict Australia under a 400-run lead in the second innings.
Former off-spinner Jeetan Patel picked up the last fifer for a NZ spinner at home in 2008 at Mclean Park against West Indies. Patel dismissed Chris Gayle (197), Sewnarine Chattergoon (25), Xavier Marshall (18), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (0) and Fidel Edwards (20) to complete his five-wicket haul. After that no Kiwi spinner was able to pick a five-wicket haul in New Zealand in test cricket.
New Zealand have scored 111 runs for the loss of three wickets while chasing a mammoth 369 runs. All-rounder Rachin Ravindra (56) played a magnificent knock to show some fight against the mighty Aussies. New Zealand failed to put up a challenge in the first innings and conceded a 204-run lead. Cemeron Green was the hero for Australia with a splendid knock of 174*.
