Gujarat Titans made their IPL debut in 2022.
In a massive development regarding the Gujarat Titans franchise, their owners CVC Capital are reportedly set to sell 67% stake of the franchise to an Ahmedabad-based Pharmaceuticals company, Torrent Group.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Torrent will be buying the majority of the stake of GT and a formal request from the CVC Capital has already been filed with the BCCI.
“It is understood the IPL is processing the paperwork before a final nod is given by the league’s governing council. Subject to the final approval, GT’s new owners could likely be involved from the 2025 season, which starts on March 21,” the report said.
CVC Capital had bought the Gujarat franchise in 2021 for INR 5625 crore. They roped in Hardik Pandya as their captain and he delivered a title in the franchise’s debut IPL season in 2022.
GT finished as the runners-up in IPL 2023 before Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians. Under new captain Shubman Gill, Gujarat had an underwhelming season, finishing eighth in IPL 2024.
Shubman Gill-Ashish Nehra to continue in their roles amid ownership change
In 2021, Torrent had tried to acquire a franchise when the BCCI announced they were introducing two new teams. Torrent bid for Ahmedabad (INR 4653 cr) and Lucknow (INR 4356 cr) but failed to get a team. In 2023, they bid unsuccessfully for three of the ten cities up for bidding for the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League.
It is learned that Jinal Mehta, the son of the Torrent Group chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta, will be in-charge of the Titans.
The change of ownership won’t have any influence on the team leadership as for now. Shubman Gill will lead GT in IPL 2025 with Ashish Nehra as the head coach.
