Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are currently playing for India in South Africa ODI series at home.
Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh has shared his views on legendary batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma receiving harsh treatment by the Indian team management.
As debates continue over whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will play on until the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Harbhajan Singh criticised those with limited achievements for trying to dictate the future of two modern-day greats.
This comes after reports have stated that communication has broken down between India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gambhir reportedly wanted Kohli and Rohit to retire from ODIs after the South Africa series, so he could build the Indian team of his choice for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
But the two legendary ex-captains of Indian teams have made it clear that they are in for the long haul and have shown intent to play in the World Cup.
“It is very unfortunate”- Harbhajan Singh on treatment meted out to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh said he feels sorry for icons like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma because of how they have been treated recently. Harbhajan said he has no explanation for why major Indian stars are frequently sidelined, with “transition” used as the justification. Harbhajan also mentioned that he and several teammates faced similar treatment during their careers.
“I am not in a position to answer your question on why the legends have been put away or why they are being pushed away. It is beyond our understanding. I may not be able to answer because I have been a player myself, and what I have seen has happened to me as well. It has happened to many of my teammates, but it is very unfortunate. We don’t talk about it or have a discussion about it,” Harbhajan told reporters on the sidelines of the ILT20 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Harbhajan Singh was all praiseful of Virat Kohli for his ongoing performance in the India vs South Africa ODI series.
“I am so happy when I see a player like Virat Kohli who is still going strong. It is a bit unfortunate that those people are deciding their future who have not achieved much,” he added.
Virat Kohli has hammered two brilliant consecutive centuries in the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa, once again showing he still has the spark to dominate on the international stage. Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Rohit has scored two fifties and a superb unbeaten 121 in just four innings, proving he is nowhere near finished in ODI cricket.
“There was never a time when I thought he was not on track. They have always scored runs and have always been great players for India. They have done extremely well as batters and leaders of the team. I’m so happy for them; they are going very, very strong — not just going strong but setting an example for the younger generation to follow, showing what it takes to be a champion. So well done Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for setting the right example,” said Harbhajan.
The third ODI between India and South Africa will be played on December 6 in Visakhapatnam.
